EAL In partnership with The Bell Foundation

We are delighted & proud to announce that Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust & BWCET Centre for Teaching are a Centre of Expertise for the North of England, working in partnership with The Bell Foundation – both aligned in our objective of improving outcomes for multilingual learners by embedding long-term, sustainable EAL provision and inclusive practices. 

Building sustainable provision for learners who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) with the aim of improving their learning outcomes. Centres are accredited and quality assured by The Bell Foundation to run Language for Results training to schools in their regions and each Centre has a team of dedicated EAL trainers who are licensed and trained by The Bell Foundation to run high-quality EAL professional development courses for teachers and other school staff.

Session details as follows for Summer 2026:

Leading a Whole School Strategy – Wednesday 24th June – online – 3.30pm until 5.30pm

Who is this session for:

  • Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Middle Leaders
  • Pastoral leads
  • EAL co-ordinators
  • Staff with responsibility for leading on EAL

  • To learn about cutting-edge methods to drive evidence-informed, impactful interventions for EAL learners.

  • To discover valuable resources tailored to improve outcomes for learners using EAL.

How long is the session – The session lasts two hours.

Comprehensible English for New Arrivals using EAL – Thursday 18th June – online – 3.30pm until 5.30pm

Who is this session for:

  • All school staff, including:
    • Administrators;
    • Teaching assistants;
    • Teachers;
    • Senior leaders;
    • School governors.

Why you should register for the training:

  • This course for international school staff will familiarise you with some of the challenges learners using EAL might face when learning English and learning through English at the same time. 
  • The course explores what can make English difficult to understand and introduces a range of easy-to-use, practical strategies for giving instructions and checking understanding which can be used both in and out of the classroom.
  • Using these practical strategies will better enable learners using EAL to understand school staff in a range of school situations, access curriculum content and integrate successfully into the school community.

Adaptive Teaching for Learners using EAL – Monday 8th June – online – 3.30pm until 5.30pm

Who is this session for:

  • Teaching staff.
  • Teaching assistants.
  • EAL co-ordinators.

Why you should register for the training:

  • To learn how to adapt your teaching methods to address the language development needs of EAL pupils while delivering curriculum content.
  • To gain access to easy-to-use strategies that can be implemented immediately in your classroom.
  • To discover techniques to support EAL learners without compromising on academic expectations.
  • To improve your ability to deliver inclusive, effective teaching that meets both language and curriculum goals.
  • To equip yourself with tools that can make an immediate difference in your teaching practice.

How long is the session – The session lasts 2 hours

Teaching Assistants: Working with Learners using EAL – 2 online sessions – Monday 29th June and Wednesday 8th July – 3.20pm until 4.15pm

Who is this session for::

  • Teaching assistants in primary/secondary settings;
  • Classroom support staff in primary/secondary settings.

Why you should register for the training:

  • To gain insight into the specific challenges EAL learners face when learning English and learning through English simultaneously.
  • To learn practical, easy-to-implement strategies to support EAL learners in developing essential language skills.
  • To discover methods to help EAL learners access the curriculum more effectively and achieve their full potential.
  • To enhance your ability to provide tailored support to EAL learners as a teaching assistant.
  • To improve your skills and confidence in assisting EAL learners within your educational setting.

How long is the session – Each session lasts 45 minutes – please attend both

EAL Coordinators – Leading EAL in your school – 2 online sessions – Monday 15th and Wednesday 17th June 2026 – 3.15pm until 5.45pm x 2 sessions online please attend both 

Who is the this session for:

  • Practitioners who are tasked with leading the EAL provision in their school, in a role such as EAL Coordinator or EAL Lead – It is a highly practical course with participants expected to consider EAL provision in their own school.

Why should you register for this training:

  • Explore roles and responsibilities in leading EAL 
  • Understand EAL provision in your school, including key procedures –  An EAL policy, Admissions and inclusions;
  • Assessment, target-setting and tracking  
  • Explore the integration of EAL across the school, including – Collaborating with colleagues,  Families and the wider community;  A culture of inclusion and equity
  • Teaching and Learning.

How long is the session – The course is in two parts, both are 2 hours and 30 minutes each. There are pre-course tasks recommended for everyone except those who have already completed “Leading a Whole School Strategy.” There are also post-course tasks, intended to take between 1 and 3 hours.
